Jackie Anderson, an eighth-grader at Central Middle School in Columbia Heights, is the winner of an annual Bookmark Design Contest. Sponsored by the Friends of Anoka County Library, this year’s contest drew 118 bookmark designs from students in grades 6 through 12. Jackie participated in the summer reading program and submitted her design at the Columbia Heights Public Library. Each of the eight Anoka County libraries, along with the Columbia Heights Library, displayed the bookmark designs, and people voted for their favorite. Then each library selected a winner, and Friends of the Library board members voted on those designs to determine the final winner. Jackie’s bookmark is available at all the Anoka County library buildings and the Columbia Heights Public Library.
The state Department of Employment and Economic Development has promoted the week ending today, Oct. 30, as Minnesota Manufacturers Week. Mounds View city officials honored the week by visiting and touring MultiTech Systems, an electronics manufacturer that has been in business in Mounds View since 1989. To prepare for a move that year from a site in New Brighton, MultiTech built a facility totaling 75,000 square feet at 2205 Woodale Drive in Mounds View in 1988. The company built an expansion of 60,000 square feet in Mounds View in 1992, and also has properties in France and the United Kingdom. MultiTech employs 225 people at its Mounds View facility, including 80 in research and development. As explained by Vice President of Manufacturing Del Palacheck, a major product line built by MultiTech includes modems that are used in health care and retail among other industries. After leading Mounds View officials and other guests on a tour of the site, Palacheck spoke more about the company and its relationship with Mounds View. Heidi Steinmetz, Mounds View economic development specialist, led the initiative to arrange a tour at MultiTech. This was the second year city officials have taken a tour of a Mounds View manufacturing business. Steinmetz spoke about the program and Minnesota Manufacturers Week. MultiTech is nearing its 40th anniversary of operations after starting in a small building in Dinkytown in 1970. For about the company, visit their website: www.multitech.com.
